The Ideagoras are the market places of minds, of ideas, of people willing to help others that need ideas, the right questions asked, solutions, to solve the innovation dilemma, talent, inventions, creative freelancers all around the world.
Agora was the Greek City Market place, where people met, to be informed, to exchange political positions, speeches and to trade, a place of Assembly, it was usually a rectangular square surrounded by buildings. For Athens its Agora was considered its political heart
The term Ideagoras has been coined by Don Tapscott and Anthony D Williams, authors of Wikinomics, as the online ideas marketplace. So we refer Ideagora as the Public arena for ideas, innovation and the global brain.
Today’s Companies, Organizations, Institutions, Governments, NGO’s are looking outside rather than inside to solve unsolvable issues with an extended brain of talent, the need for the Global Brain is more frequent than thought for, because the traditional innovation channels of R&D and Creativity are not enough.
The movement has started in North America’s Corporate World but is rapidly extending out, to all the world and in all directions and disciplines. It is changing the way Companies respond to the idea, product, service, innovation issues in a drastic manner.
There are many examples today in the market , we have several Ideagoras open on the Internet for some time Innocentive by Lilly and its partners, Connect and Develop P&G extra-net which has been successful, in such a way that for every 10 new product/ innovation, 7 come from outside the organization, fro what we have coined ideators in our project very soon to be launched ideas4all.com. Gold-corporation and Colgate Palmolive toothpaste are example of finding solution form the mass collaboration from the outside crowd, Dell ideastorm, My Starbucks idea, Kraft, Virgin , J&J Pharmaceuticals, and many other companies have private and public small scale ideagoras in the Internet, All are expanding its talent and asset networks very rapidly.
There are other ideagoras not necessarily related to a Company alone like nine-sigma, Innovation XChange Network, Eureka Medical, YourENCORE, a retired talent pool, Top Coder, Innovation relay Centers, Elance programmers network, and others which have appeared more recently and of which we will be talking about in the near future
Quoting from Wikiniomics authors “Take Colgate-Palmolive (CL). The company needed a more efficient method for getting its toothpaste into the tube—a seemingly straightforward problem. When its internal R&D team came up empty-handed, the company posted the specs on InnoCentive, one of many new marketplaces that link problems with problem-solvers. A Canadian engineer named Ed Melcarek proposed putting a positive charge on fluoride powder, then grounding the tube. It was an effective application of elementary physics, but not one that Colgate-Palmolive’s team of chemists had ever contemplated. Melcarek was duly rewarded with $25,000 for a few hours work”.
We believe there is a quasi infinite ideas reservoir that needs to be surfaced, imagine only in the Emerging Markets like China, India, Brazil and the rest of the Latin-America countries and we all need to take advantage of it. We listened to David Sifry , Technorati founder and blogger in a Madrid Conference where he too said “There is a false world scarcity of ideas, they just need attention”
Not only from the emerging markets but also from the Developed markets, we have an ideas reservoir waiting to be surfaced, we recently conducted research about the need to share ideas and problems and the feeling that your ideas were wasted because you did not have a global ideas sharing platform a Global Ideagoras and the results were above our predictions. Online Pannel Research was conducted in USA and UK with 75 % said they had ideas they would like to share and 87% they had problems they would like to share. In addition 55% said they feel very often or sometimes that their ideas are wasted because there is not an easy way to share and channel them. Hence we find corroboration of under-utilization of human capital, our project is based under the premise that there is abundance, plenty of, external resources and a huge talent pool we just need to help others to cross organizational barriers and boundaries in a complementary manner rather than a competitive manner.
