The Lacoste company has made an animation on how they imagine tennis will be like in 75 years’ time. The video was made for the occasion of the 75th anniversary of this company, whose specialty has been the manufacturing of sports clothes, especially conceived for tennis players.
It is my opinion that this work or advertising campaign –whatever it may be perceived as – of Lacoste’s can serve as a source of inspiration for new idea contests created with the purpose of developing existing products by imagining what they will be like in quite a few years’ time.
One must view the imaginative effort needed for creating a design or product as directly related to currently existing knowledge of the relevant technologies or processes in each case. It can be quite easy to imagine, but if this is done on the basis of unfeasible elements, it is of less value than if one carries out a detailed examination of the situation and contributes ideas that will become feasible once technology and human knowledge have evolved enough.
One clear example of all this is to be found in the Jules Verne’s ideas, which have proven far from misconceived with the passing of time, since almost all of his proposals have been put into practice and even, in many cases, become objects of common use among people.
