On the website portalIPv6.lacnic, the call for a contest based on applications on the new version of IPv6 has been started. According to Jordi Palet, “this is the new version of the protocol of data nets on which internet is based. The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) developed its basic specifications during the 90es. The most important motivation for the design and roll-out of IPv6 was the expansion of the available address space in internet, thus allowing the connection of billions of new devices (PDAs, mobile phones, etc.), new users and “always connected” technologies (xDSL, cable, Ethernet at home, fibre at home, communications through the electricity net, etc.)”. The currently existing protocol is called IPv4. It is limiting the addresses to 32 bits.
The objective of the contest is generating ideas and applications around IPv6 and the way of extending its use at global level. To achieve this, two categories are proposed:
* Applications and implementations: they must comply with the criteria of being new applications of the IPv6 software or improved versions of the already existing, and compatible with Linux and Windows operating systems in their most recent versions.
* Ideas: based on highlighting the advantages and qualities of IPv6, referring to the nets and the most advanced and free characteristics of communication and connectivity.
In the first category, three prizes will be awarded. The first one will be 10.000 Euro. In the second category, several prizes of 1.000 Euro each will be awarded.
To elect the winners, the jury will take into consideration above all the innovation and the degree of expansion the application or the idea will add to the new protocol.
To participate, you have to register the application or the idea before April, 10th, 2009. The awards will be handed over during a ceremony in May, during the 2nd German National IPv6 Summit at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute of University of Potsdam.
