Al though at first sight you may not know what we are talking about, we are convinced that you know the name, albeit you have never ever been there. We are talking about Coney Island, the amusement park located in Brooklyn, the crowded quarter of New York. We believe that you know Coney Island, because you have for sure seen it as scenery in many, many movies. The Astroland has been for 45 years and until two months ago, when it was definitely closed, a place with special charm and option for their leisure time for many middle and lower class New Yorkers.
The alternative the owner of the site seems to be evaluating now is the creation of a game center (a sort of Las Vegas), but this option is not the preferred one by many inhabitants of New York. For this reason, The Municipal Art Society of New York has started the initiative Imagine Coney, trying to compile ideas focused on revitalizing and reinventing the area with the aim that Coney Island continues being a fun and leisure area for all New Yorkers.
Every idea and proposal (thoughts, memories and images stimulating ideas of others) is compiled on the own web (you may see them at the Gallery) of Imagine Coney. During the month of November, three workshops have been held to generate ideas; two of these workshops were open to the public, and the third one was exclusive for experts (engineers, architects, creative …) During January, 2009, an exposition dedicated to Coney Island at the Municipal Art Society of New York will open its doors.
