Certainly, it does not seem as if the sector of videogames is the one in most need of creativity and new ideas, if we look at the data that show that this industry is already bigger than the cinema industry in terms of revenues. According to the most optimistic ones, it also exceeds the movie sector in regard of quality. Anyway, and as we said when posting one of our monthly challenges, imagination is a must for the existence of the videogame world.
Global Game Jam 2009 is an event that has been celebrated during the weekend of January, 30th and February, 1st.
But what exactly is a Game Jam? According to the words of the promoters in Spain (members of the Complutense University in Madrid), a Game Jam is the intense and exciting gathering of videogame creating fans. Participants of a Game Jam meet in small teams and work to develop a complete videogame in a very short period of time –usually just one weekend. The goal of these meetings is having fun, creating experimental games that are original and innovative.
Let us make a brief stop here and remember that the philosophy is very similar to the goals of the iWeekend, which we already have presented here: an appointment at which 50 entrepreneurs start an internet company during a weekend.
But the Global Game Jam has a very interesting particularity, which is implicit to the word global included in its name: we are talking about an event that is celebrated simultaneously all over the world in 53 locations in total, Madrid being one of them. From Friday 17:00 to Sunday 17:00 during that weekend, 48 hours in total; on the official website, you may see the created games.
The event ends when participants and a jury of professional elect the best games.
We have read about Global Game Jam 2009 in the information published by the newspaper El País.
