I have always wondered, about our educational system not been capable of acknowledging creative talent in other forms other than Mathematics, Science or Languages. Other talents like art, drawing, manual artisan capacities, dance, drama and music, were never considered as important.
In the US and Europe, in the recent past, we have neglected the importance of creativity in early education. In Venezuela where I went to school, at least music and dancing was given importance in school and in the social space. Then playing the cuatro, a 4 string folk instrument used mainly to accompany popular songs, was part of our education. I do not know whether this is still the case. What is, is the successfull Venezuelan Youth Orchestras phenomena.
I remember a Great friend and Professor of Painting in The Madrid Complutense University Art Faculty, who passed away, Javier Pereda, saying “the minute the Art teacher tries to conduct the way the child should draw and introduce his colours his/her way, we are mutilating the child’s creativity”. He also told me Picasso loved to repeat “All Children are born Artists”
I came across this wonderful lecture on Ted’s and You Tube by Ex Professor Ken Robinson titled “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” which I found most revealing. It wonders whether todays schools grow our children out of Creativity rather than into it. Creativity as defined by him, surfaces original ideas that have value.
We need to change our education and schools to teach creativity as well as teaching literacy, to enhance their capacity for innovation and to prepare them to be wrong. Intelligence as he claims and I couldn’t agree more, is diverse, dynamic, it is multitask -at which women do very well-, it is interative and interdisciplinary.
Today we have an Academic inflation, and degrees are worth little. We need to radically rethink our education for a better world where our children are the future. He brings a new concept of Ecology based on Human Creative Capacity and the gift of Imagination. A a new human race that does not destroy the environment.
And I hope that you as an ideator and questor will enjoy it as much as I did
