The European Commission has proposed 2009 to be the “European Creativity and Innovation Year”. This is an umbrella that will cover a large variety of initiatives.
The global target is to reinforce the creative and innovative capacity of Europe, both from a social as well as economical point of view, including the population.
The key: the combination of knowledge, abilities and attitudes focused on improving the competences of children in school, equipping them for their life as adults (preparing them specially for labor), as well as forming the base for adult learning thanks to the process of acquiring and updating knowledge.
Ján Figel, Commissioner for Education, Culture and Youth, believes that this initiative is a “effective tool to help satisfying the challenges of awareness of the public, the spread of information on good practices, the stimulation of education and research, creativity and innovation, and the promotion of the political debate, at national, regional and local levels, all of which may generate synergies and help to focus the political debate on specific questions”.
Activities of the year will be focused on the creation of an environment favorable to creativity and innovation. Highlights will be education, companies, mass media, research, society and regional politics and rural development. It will include information and awareness campaigns, promotion of good practices, debates, meetings, conferences and the promotion of a large variety of projects at region al, national and European level.
Artistic creation and new points of view in culture will also get the right attention as communication medium between Europeans and as continuation of the European Year of Dialogue (2008).
The Commission is not proposing us a specific budget, because it believes that all these activities can be organized within the already EU programs. With the aim of `promoting participation of all those interested, the Commission is inviting member states to name national coordinators which may cooperate as a small directive group at EU level.
